Once a very traditional layout, this executive golf course home is now all about open concept living with an industrial loft vibe
When called in to view this home during the real estate process, our clients asked the question all designers love to hear – “what would you do?” As a million ideas began circulating our immediate recommendation was to remove approximately one-third of the existing walls to open and brighten the space. Over the course of the showing, as they began to visualize our proposed plan, the clients asked our second favourite question, “when can you start?”
An extensive reno ensued. A complete redesign of the interior space, while maintaining the original footprint, included opening up the stairway, kitchen, dining and family gathering space on the main. Reimagined spaces on the lower level included open concept games room and indoor sport court. On the top floor, a revision of the master layout along with custom lofts for both children’s rooms designed to suit their specific personalities.
Steel support beams, structural in nature yet aesthetically pleasing, are paired with reclaimed timbers to create ceiling details that transport us to what could be a Gastown loft conversion.
Reclaimed rustic floorboards, warm underfoot, not only tell the story of time gone by, they also help hide any signs of wear and tear that can occur in a home bursting with the activity of kids and a dog.
Comfortable furnishings and creatively sourced antique pieces fill the space creating a cozy atmosphere in sharp contrast to the grand scale of the new space.
Other details to note, wall and ceiling treatments including reclaimed brick and barnboard paneling, all new plumbing, new and salvaged light fixtures, custom millwork crafted with both new and reclaimed materials. Three sets of accordion glass doors slide open seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces. A custom arched glazed steel entry door, wine storage and well-placed repurposed architectural elements finish up the transformation.
With only minor adjustments to the traditional exterior architecture the unexpected interior makes visiting this home a feast for the senses.
